Google Analytics is a free service offered by Google that allows you to gather detailed statistics about your website traffic.
How we use Google Analytics
At 46digital we use and recommend Google Analytics as part of our Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) service. Getting started with Google Analytics involves first setting up an account and then inserting the provided tracking code into your website so we can start collecting data about your website traffic.
The benefits are two-fold because you not only get to understand how visitors are finding you in Google searches but also how your visitors are interacting with your website once they reach you. I will discuss each of these benefits separately starting with understanding and measuring where your traffic is coming from.
Understanding and Measuring website traffic sources
A typical mix of visitors and examples of where they are coming from will be something like this:
- Search traffic
- Direct traffic
- Referral traffic
- Campaigns traffic
Why is understanding where your website traffic comes from important to your business? Because once you are armed with knowledge about your traffic sources you can start to apply this to your marketing efforts around things like social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram or Google+) and search engine marketing (e.g. Google Adwords). You can also start to measure your return on investment (and time) according to each of your traffic sources.
The most important of the traffic sources is search traffic because this is typically how new visitors will find you. It goes without saying that being found on Google is very important to marketing your website and therefore your business online.
Understanding and Measuring visitor interactions and conversions
The goal of any website is always to create as many conversions as possible. For example, if you are providing information about your products or services a conversion might be an enquiry or visitors downloading a product brochure. If you are selling products online via a shopping cart then your conversions will be product sales.
In short, a conversion for your business website is about defining what constitutes success for your business. The better you are at defining and measuring this success, the better your website will be.
By measuring visitor interactions with your website you will gain a better insight in to the areas you can improve on to make your website more successful in converting.
